Miro (Podocarpus ferrugineus)

 

Miro is a forest tree prevalent in the valley and grows to a height of approx 25 metres.  The trunk is smooth, branchless, grey with a flaking hammer-marked bark, growing to a diameter of 1.3 meters.  Similar foliage to Totara with stiff dark leaves on branchlets in two rows.  The fruit are large dark red berries maturing in winter.  The berries are also one of the favorite food of the Kereru (native wood pigeon).
